Racial disparities in United States health care isn’t a new issue. For decades, researchers have studied the differences in quality of care between people of color and their white counterparts. They lead to poor health outcomes and exemplify low value healthcare.

Our latest course in the Health Care Leadership Series, Reducing Racial Disparities in Health Care, addresses these exact challenging conversations alongside faculty and industry leaders from Harvard Medical School (HMS), Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH), and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
“There can be a sense that we’re doing everything right, so all of the disparity is somewhere out there,” says Mitchell Kellaway, Program Manager for Data Accuracy at Mass General Brigham. “But we need to be really honest with ourselves when it’s at home.”
In Reducing Racial Disparities in Health Care, learners will examine the disparities that exist when serving a diverse population, investigate the causes of these inequities, and consider how to use a data-driven approach to address each one head-on.
By focusing on data collection and performance measurements unique to your organization, you will identify core issues in the care quality of underserved populations, which are often multifactorial in nature. You will see how these issues contribute to substandard care delivery and higher costs for people from underrepresented groups.
“To drive change, it’s important that our stakeholders include leadership but also middle management and frontline staff,” notes Aswita Tan-McGrory, MBA, MSPH and Director of the Disparities Solutions Center at MGH. “I think we have a tendency in health care to focus strictly on clinicians, but our infrastructure is much larger than that. To really drive organizational change, we have to include people from the top of our organization all the way to the bottom.”
